Without the vocal majesty of Hayley Mary powering me through my colossal #100Musicians adventure, [her band was on my iPod C O N S T A N T L Y and soundtracked my dorm room workouts], it’s questionable whether the six months it took me to complete the challenge would have been quite as memorable.
In this special EXTENDED feature, I meet Hayley [lead vocals of Australian indie-rock/synth-pop band, The Jezabels] for the first time.
A multi award-winning four-piece composed of Nik Kaloper [Drums], Samuel Lockwood [Guitars], Hayley Mary [Vocals] & Heather Shannon [Keys], The Jezabels continue to attract international acclaim – having secured two Rolling Stone awards, an Australian Music Award and a staggering eight ARIA nominations. A solid release history, featuring a trilogy of EP’s and three full-length albums, has afforded The Jezabels international touring status, most notably playing 200 shows in one year.
Despite the influence The Jezabels had on my monster journey, they were, of course, oblivious to the fact I was listening to their fiercely addictive music. When I learned Hayley was in London, however, I optimistically sent an email to their manager, informing him of their enormous contribution. To my utter delight, within four hours, he replied. The rest is history.
In our casual pub chat [recorded Wednesday 13 April, 2016], Hayley and I discuss cake, beer, arseholes, her signature stage moves, and… I take my top off (the only way of making a twenty-minute video worthwhile, obviously)
Please feel free to comment below – let me know your favourite Jezabels song, EP or album.
